Health Benefits of Corn Oil on Cholesterol

Corn oil is a very effective ingredient in lowering blood cholesterol levels in humans. Corn oil producers in India produce oils that are high in polyunsaturated fats rather than saturated fats. Polyunsaturated fats lower blood cholesterol levels. Monounsaturated fats either lower or raise blood cholesterol levels. Embedded fats are about twice as destructive in raising cholesterol compared to polyunsaturated fats, which lower cholesterol. Corn oil contains approximately 60 percent polyunsaturated fat, 25-30 percent monounsaturated fat, and 10-15 percent saturated fat. The Food and Drug Administration recognizes that the unsaturated fatty acids in corn oil reduce the risk of heart disease. FDA Letter to ACH Food Companies, Inc. Regarding Qualified Health Claims.

According to the U.S. Agriculture Department, there are 968 milligrams of phytosterols per 100 grams of Corn oil. It has the highest phytosterol levels of refined vegetable oils. Only oil with a higher phytosterol content at 1,190 mg/100 grams is rice-bran oil. Corn oil is the only product that contains a natural mixture of free phytosterol, phytosterol esters, and phytosterol esters.

Numerous human studies show that diets enriched in polyunsaturated fatty acids can significantly lower elevated blood pressure in individuals with high blood pressure. Corn oil manufacturers in India were used in many of these studies. Diets made by using or adding corn oil have shown blood pressure lowering of about 12 percent in gents and 5 percent in ladies who had elevated blood pressure mild hypertension. No significant effect of polyunsaturation has been noted in persons with normal blood pressure.

Antioxidant activity of tocopherols is important when it comes to health terms, it is also in terms of quality of the product because it helps development of rancidity.

There are four major tocopherols found in corn oil those are:

  • Alpha-tocopherol,
  • Beta-tocopherol,
  • Gamma tocopherol and
  • Delta-tocopherol.
In corn oil which is easily available, gamma-tocopherol is the most abundant, followed by alpha-tocopherol and delta-tocopherol. The tocopherol that exhibits the greatest antioxidant effect is delta-tocopherol and alpha-tocopherol has the highest vitamin E activity.
